Winning the 9.90

My favourite nightly tournament on Stars is the 9.90 that starts at 9:15pm and caps at 360 players. I won it on August 25th and finally had a chance the blog the hand history. I am very happy with this tourney because I was in first almost the whole way.

Another blind vs blind hand. The turn bet concerned me a bit but I figured I had a lot of outs. I find it amazing now how many bad stars players think betting complete air in the blinds is a profitable play.

This looks like a tight fold but I have been making it more and more lately. Basically lots of people to act behind me, I really would prefer re-raising as opposed to calling. I have added folding as an option here and it works very well.

Re-reading here I am not a big fan of the preflop min-raise. I guess my logic was that it would force the other player to push or fold but Stars players hate folding so I thought he would push. He ended up doing it when he touched the flop.

This was where I really felt my game was taking off. I felt so comfortable with this river call. I figured he had AK the way he played it. The only other hands I worried about were TT or 99 but it made no sense to bet the river like that. I really like to have chips to make these calls.

This hand was weird. I guess he was trapping me with JJ and it turns out to be a solid play. I really thought I had the best hand but now I am not sure why I 3 bet the flop. Sometimes Stars players are so bad, they will do this with AK or AQ.

18 hands it takes for me to get my next big hand. At this point we are down to 2 tables. I have been so quiet and I raise UTG and get called by T7os (so many weak players never realize that I am so tight UTG when I raise from there I am huge). To be honest my check on the flop was more about pot control in position than trapping. I am against a total unknown player on a straight draw board. I don’t want to die on a pair here so I figure by checking I keep the pot small. If a straight draw card hits it will likely help my card too. Once the turn hits, I am loosing to one hand but I have outs now if he flopped it. I really still was not looking to play a huge pot but I bet the turn to get information on his hand. When he shoved the river I did not insta-call but I kept thinking noone ever plays 9T like that. I am certain he would not have shoved with 9T so I figured he missed some kind of straight draw. What a huge pot as now I was in 1st place to stay by a huge lead.

This guy was the better of the 2 players. I was a little upset with myself for not pushing preflop. This is a huge mistake that many people make and I did it here. I think he might fold 77 here or call off on it and I am in great shape against 77.

I was very close to 4 betting here. I was certain he didn’t have an Ace but I was worried he might have 87, 97 or an overpair to my 2 cards. I just didn’t feel like I had enough outs if I shove with nothing and he calls.

This is the very next hand. Again KT is not a bad 3 handed hand to call with but I decided no more calling against this guy. If he was raising and I was playing with him, it was for everything. I figured if I lost one of these huge pots, I could still make a comeback 3 handed and I thought he would slow down and not call with a hand like A9 especially with the payouts the way they were. ($810 for 1st, $518 for 2nd and $360 for 3rd). If he did call with A9 we were 60/40 which is fine with me, I can gamble. The way the board hits is irrelevant to me, you call with A9 and you know you are only a slight favourite.
