Winning Turbo 180s - The Explanation

I had posted a hand history last week without any explanations on any of the hands. I had a lot of people asking what I was thinking on several hands and I committed to explaining each hand and why I played them the way I did. This is classic for a turbo 180 where so many players overplay their nothing early. Usually if I am going to win one of these, getting a double up early is very important.

I usually raise like this pre, willing to get it all-in, I will usually keep the pot small but there is no chance the villain has a Q since he checked twice. Hitting a set is a bonus but not needed.

This is the point in the turbos where I am willing to get it all-in pre with almost anything. Hopefully everyone folds and I add 50% to my stack, if they don’t fold hopefully I am no worse than 33% to win the hand. Considering they will fold 85% of the time, I am way ahead here.

This is looks like an insane shove but most turbo players will not call 50% of their stack without at least Ace high. As long as no pair calls, I am 60/40, its risky but again the pot is too big not to shove any 2 here.

This shove here is supposed to show great strength because I am shoving so early. Also 87s is a great hand if you get called by Ax (as long as it not A7 or A8). At this point I know if I hit the BB without shoving, I am basically dead and will have to call off with almost anything in the BB. By shoving here I create fold equity for myself. Again if I get called, lets hope I am 60/40.

This hand is very debatable. I can really honestly advocate a fold in this spot. Whenever I call off my stack in this spot there has to be some chance I am ahead (by ahead I mean 70/30). The range of the original shover is so wide here, it would definitely include many hands that I am crushing and several I am racing with. At this point I decide to risk it and take a chance I might be crushing and it turns out I am racing. Again folding in this spot is not terrible but its not likely I am going to find a better spot than this with 3 big blinds.

This was another one that made people ask a lot of questions. Basically Ace high in any position at this point is huge. Also I have a good enough stack at this point to hurt everyone so there is a lot of fold equity. The thing about UTG with blinds this big is by the time the action will be open folded to me again I will probably have lost half my stack. By shoving here it allows me to hold on until I can actually get a real hand to shove with.

Again this a UTG shove with any Ace. My stack is big enough that I can fold here but blinds are going up and I am about to face the blinds again. Adding 30% to my stack here is so big and even if I run into KK, I am still 30% to win.

This definitely had people asking me questions and shaking their heads but if you look at this play I am basically risking 900 to win a 5280 pot with what is probably live cards. The math works so well here that I don’t even think about this play and would shove everytime in the same spot. I need to shove here to shutout the BB who would not call without a huge hand.

This hand kind of played itself out. It was a blind steal turned re-steal. I basically gave up on the hand but there is not a single player that would check anything on that river so I knew he could not call a shove even with Ace high.

We are shorthanded now close to the final table which is where everyone plays so tight. I try min raising in case anyone has a big hand and to mix it up. Normally I hate min-raising but this is one of the few scenarios I don’t mind it. I hit a gin flop which obviously I never fold on.

Here again I get lucky and pick up AA. There is really only one starting hand I would ever flat with pre-flop at this point of any tourney. Now I have a stack and more than 20 big blinds when everyone else is really short and we are at the final table. This is where I really get focused on winning.

This is another hand that made a lot of people ask questions. Forget my hand for a second and focus on the villain. It folds to him in the cutoff and he has ~6 big blinds. If he shoves and everyone folds he adds 50% to his stack. Basically his range here is literally any 2 cards. A7s is a monster in this spot. If I lose I still have around 47k but if I win I am going to have a huge stack. I am ahead of the villian’s range here > 80% of the time here and this is an insta-call 100% of the time.
