The Prescott Experience

So on Saturday I made my way out to Prescott to play in a $160 freezeout. Now why would I drive an hour away to play at a buy-in higher than I am used to in a blind structure I have never played? Simple answer: I was asked to play by the organizer. He had come to my house to play and I felt that I should repay. He only had 33 show although I was told to expect around 60. At that point I was already there and I didn't care. I just paid and took my seat.

The structure was pretty good. We started with 10k in chips and blinds started at 25/50 and were 30 minutes long. I had no idea what to expect but figured I would learn as I went. On about the 3rd hand of the game I was dealt AD9D and I raised to 150 in late position the button called and the SB called. The flop came A27 with one diamond. It was checked to me and I bet 400. The button raised to 800 and the SB flat called. I was totally confused and with no read I folded thinking I probably had the best hand. The turn was a 5 and it went check/check. The river was a 4 and the SB checked and the button bet 200. The SB calls and the button shows 88 and the SB shows A6. Let the donkey show begin, I thought.

Out of the 1st 4 hands I won, I chopped 3 of them. 2 of those I got lucky and hit my split outs on the river as I was outkicked. So by level 4, I had 8100 and blinds were just about to goto 300/600. I really needed to do something. I raised to 1100 with QSJS in the cutoff seat with blinds still 200/400. I just wanted the blinds but noone folds in this game. The SB and the BB called so now there is 3300 in the pot. The flop came AS10S10D, it was checked to me and I knew even if someone it the 10, I was still 36% to win the hand. If noone hit anything likely they fold. The worst case scenario was AA, 1010 or A10 which I still had one out against (lol). I bet 3000 into the pot leaving myself with 4000 and the BB went allin for 3900 more. I was getting 4/1 on my money and I was less than a 3/1 dog but really I could not play that game with 4000 in chips and the blinds 300/600 because there was no fold equity at the table. I called and he had 710 sooted (don't ask tough laydown I guess when your M is under 10). I said cmon draw!!! The turn was a KC and the river was a J and my hand held. I had 16k now. The next hand I folded AQ to a raise because I wanted to stay patient.

The interesting thing about a tourney with this many bad players is you don't need to do much. Just stay alive and wait until the end to make your moves against very inexperienced players. So with 11 left here I am sitting with 12k. Blinds are 400/800 but we are playing shorthanded at a table of 5. I knew I needed to make some kind of move.

At this point a very unfortunate incident happened. It changed the game for the rest of the night and it delayed the game for 45 minutes. We almost did not play the rest of the game but we did. This situation has not been rectified yet but I am giving it until Wednesday before I post anything online about it I will leave it at that.

When we came back to play I changed gears completely. I pushed all-in about 5 of the next 10 hands. AJ, AQ, AK, all strong hands 5 handed. Just before the last table break, a tight player limped UTG. I raised to 3200 on the button with 8C10C. It folded back to the limper who thought forever and folded AJo. I meant to show a 10 but I showed an 8 by accident..oops. When the Final Table started I had about 23k. Blinds were 500/1000. I made a really bad play out of the SB and ran into someone who rivered the nuts and I was down to 16k. Then I really started to go nuts. Blinds were 700/1400. There were 3 limpers into my button and I went all-in with J5o. It folded all the way to the cutoff who said he wanted to call but he didn't feel his kicker was good and he mucked A5s. I showed him my hand and said you had me outkicked but I thought I was good.

These guys were going nuts by this point. I played no hands for the entire game and now I am going like a madman. The next hand UTG raises allin for 6000 UTG +1 flat calls. It gets to my button and I had AQo. I never would usually think that was good but UTG+1 called an allin earlier with AQ. I figured this was a good spot to make a move and I went allin. It was another 13-14k for the UTG+1 to call so I expected a fold but he called with QQ. I hit my A and said ship it. The other player had 22 and missed. So now I have around 50k and I feel unbeatable. I tightened up and was down around 48k with blinds 2000/4000. UTG made it 19k and I look down at 88. I was pretty sure we were racing and if I pushed he was not folding so I folded. He had 40k total and said after he had AQ and he couldn't fold with half his stack in there. Then my big turning point hand was when I was in the BB. There was 3 limpers on my blind. I had KHQH. The flop came QJ3 with 2 clubs. I bet 10k into a pot of about 15k and got 2 callers. For some reason I though one had a club draw and the other hand K10. The turn was 3 of spades and I bet 22k and they both folded and one players showed K10,the other showed KJ. So that pot put me at about 80k. The on the bubble 7 handed the tighted player at the table raised to 15k. He only had 25 behind him but I went all-in with 88, he called with AK and did not hit and I busted him and I went over 100k to about 120k. Down to 6 handed and 2 players were very short. After one busted the other went all-in for 14k. One player flat called and I was BB and called blind (at the 3/6000 level). We checked it down and I never looked at my cards. The board was 937Q2 and the all-in player showed 89, the caller showed AJ and I revealed my blind hand. First card was a 9 and the 2 card was a J and I busted another player to goto 4 handed.

I was all over the other shortstack because he was in my blind and I raised half his stack with A6. He flat called and the flop came 772. I went all-in and he folded which was wierd. He pushed an busted few minutes later. Onto 3 handed and about the 3rd hand I raise to 22k from the button. The SB pushes all-in for 21k more and I have no choice but to call. He shows AK and I am happy because I have J7 sooted (the MYST). The flop comes 7 club club. I have J7 clubs. I am screaming worlds fair worlds fair. The player didn't hit and I busted another player.

Heads up was not great on my part. I pushed the opponent in on a flush draw and he turned over a higher flush draw and hit so we were about even. Then I was very short and I battled back because I could literally tell when he was strong or not so I kept calling his bets and betting on the river and he would fold. We were back around even again and we ended up allin, I had A9 and he had AQ. River was a 9 and he was crippled. He went all-in blind next hand and I called with A10 sooted but he hit and I did not. He battled back to even and we agree to chop. I won $1460 total but there is a story behind it. Hopefully I never write the story on here.
